City library gives first-time reading books to school beginners - reading festival canceled due to Corona

The city library on the Nuremberg Education Campus * distributes a first-reading book to all first graders as part of the “Kick-off - a book for every school starter”.

In what is now the 13th year of the campaign, the book "Oceans" from the series "WAS IST WAS Ersteslesen" from the Nuremberg-based Tessloff Verlag will be distributed over the course materials to around 5,300 school beginners.

The promotion of reading skills is one of the core tasks of the Nuremberg City Library.

Because reading aloud and reading are essential to give children access to knowledge and education, according to a message from the town hall.

The skills laid the foundation for academic and professional success and played a key role in personal development, especially for young people - for example, for developing imagination and empathy.

With the campaign “Kick-off - a book for every school starter”, the city library, together with the Manfred Lochner Foundation, the Verein Deutsche Sprach eV, the HypoVereinsbank and the Tessloff Verlag, would like to make a contribution to encouraging and thus encouraging reading in children to enable a good start for further education. 

The campaign is also intended to make the parents of the first graders aware of the importance of reading: Each book comes with a brochure containing tips in a total of eight languages ​​on how to stimulate the youngsters' hunger for reading.

Parents are encouraged to visit the city library with their children and to take advantage of the free loan options for them. 

Nuremberg: First reading books cannot be distributed directly due to the corona pandemic 

Since the books cannot be distributed directly in the classes due to the Corona * pandemic, they will be handed over to the students again this year together with teaching materials. The large reading festival linked to the campaign, which until 2019 always took place after the books were handed out in the city library center, has to be suspended again this year due to the corona pandemic. 

The distributed first reading book takes children into the world of seas and oceans.

Here Otto, the clever octopus, explores this exciting habitat together with the novice readers.

You will get to know the three great oceans, learn how deep a person can dive, what makes a submarine and that coral reefs are the largest structures in the world.

Even a trip to the pole is on the agenda.

A fun reading quiz at the end of each chapter and at the end of the book asks what you have learned and deepens the newly acquired knowledge. 

Nuremberg: Book campaign received 10,000 euros in donations  

The city library implements the “Kick-off - a book for every school starter” every year with several sponsors.

The project receives financial support of 9,000 euros from the Manfred Lochner Foundation.

The regional group Middle Franconia of the Association of German Language e.

V. contributes to the success of the campaign with a donation of 1000 euros.

The Nuremberg Tessloff Verlag is now making the books available for the second year.

The city library's cooperation partner is the State Education Authority of the City of Nuremberg.
