For those who are fond of relaxing naked, there are no parts of the body "where the sun does not reach."

And with the right protection - a generous layer of sunscreen and masks when needed - there are many places in the world where it is safe and legal to strip off your clothes and offer your skin to delicious warm rays on the beach.

British swimwear brand Pour Moi has created a new map that reveals the 39 countries that allow topless and nude sunbathing and the 38 countries where it is too risky.

The team spent weeks researching individual countries' laws and cross-referencing them with travel forums, blogs, and social media posts.

Country classification

The resulting map classifies the countries in four colors: green, red, amber, and gray.

  • There may be several reasons why you have a lack of vitamin D, do you know them?

Europe is the continent that most accepts uncovering.

Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark and Germany are some of the many countries where you can easily find beaches that welcome you as you came to the world.

Even in the UK topless is completely legal, if done discreetly.

The countries colored red are those where public nudity of any kind is completely unacceptable or illegal.

Think twice before throwing your panties to the wind in Morocco, Grenada, Bahrain or Belarus.

You'd better pack a bathing suit in your suitcase before traveling to any of the 29 amber-colored countries, where the laws can be ambiguous or there are very few places where you can safely undress.

These places, like Tunisia, where 'topless' sunbathing is sometimes allowed in private hotels, but generally not acceptable on public beaches, will require you to do a little more research before undressing.

The countries in gray are the ones that Pour Moi doesn't have enough information about to rank, so stay covered.

Nudism in the USA

Pour Moi also created a map dedicated to the United States.

Do not take off your top in Tennessee, or your underwear in Indiana, do not uncover in Utah and be careful with your clothes in South Carolina.

  • Latin American countries that are in the US travel advisory.

"Laws on public nudity can be confused with the rules governing nude sunbathing, as many countries say that public nudity is illegal, but it is actually okay to sunbathe topless," says Pour Moi.

"For most countries, 'intent to offend' is what differentiates trying to take vitamin D without tan lines from someone who strips or shows off."

The confinement increases interest in nude beaches

Swimwear specialists have also researched what the world has Googled during those long months of confinement.

They report that in the last 12 months there have been more than 10.7 million searches worldwide for "nude beaches," "nude resorts," and "naked sunbathing."

  • How safe is it to go to the beach now?

This is what you should know

As these are English terms, the results naturally lean towards English-speaking countries.

Most of those searches were in the United States, Japan, and Brazil, but when population size is taken into account, the nations most avid for nude beach content are Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland.

Pour Moi reports that sunbathing topless is legal in Australia, that it has a green light, and that there are many beaches dedicated to the practice of nudism.

New Zealand is an amber-colored country with "designated nude sunbathing areas".

Ireland, for its part, with a red category, is a country in which a cozy sweater and a nice hooded coat are the beachwear of choice throughout the year, although in 2018 it debuted its first official nude beach at Hawk Cliff in Dublin.
