The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will launch a series of virtual sports competitions from May, the body announced on Thursday.

A "bridge" between Esport and Olympism will soon emerge. While some are campaigning to see one day the practice of video games become a discipline at the Games, the first edition of the "Olympic virtual series" will take place before the Tokyo Olympics, between May 13 and June 23, announced the Committee. International Olympic (IOC) in a statement. The event will feature online competitions in cycling, rowing, sailing, baseball and softball and motor racing, in association with the international federations of these sports and game publishers video "The Olympic Virtual Series is a new and unique digital Olympic experience that aims to strengthen direct engagement with new audiences in the field of virtual sports," said IOC President Thomas Bach.

Other sports, such as football, tennis or taekwondo, have expressed their interest in the event but will not participate in this first edition.

With this competition, the IOC is realizing its interest in virtual sports, without however fully engaging in Esport and its major video games such as League of Legends or Counter-Strike.

Worried about the growing disinterest of the younger generations, several sports federations have already taken a first step towards Esport in recent years, a phenomenon which has been accentuated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since 2019, Fifa has been organizing its virtual World Cup played on the FIFA video game.

In cycling, the UCI launched its first virtual cycling world championships last year, which takes place on the Zwift platform.
