The security situation in Jerusalem has traditionally been delicate during Ramadan, and tensions have now emerged.

On Friday night, there were hours of unrest between Israeli security forces and Palestinians.

More than 50 people were arrested and around twice as many injured, according to Reuters news agency.

This makes it the worst rioting in a long time.

According to the Israeli police, hundreds of security guards were deployed in several parts of the city.

According to media reports, the clashes began after an event by right-wing Israelis.

Among other things, you are said to have shouted anti-Palestinian slogans.

According to the police, around 20 officers were injured.

According to Reuters, videos were circulating on social media showing violent attacks by Palestinians on Israelis.

In the past few days, Israelis and Palestinians had clashed repeatedly in the city.

There had been clashes on Wednesday night after videos surfaced on the Internet showing Palestinians and journalists being attacked by Jewish youth in Jerusalem's Old City.

Young Palestinians then organized a counter-demonstration.

The Federal Foreign Office warns of tensions during Ramadan

The Foreign Office in Berlin points out in its travel advice that during the fasting month of Ramadan the situation in the old town and its immediate surroundings is particularly tense.

Violent riots are possible, especially on Fridays and during the daily prayer times, especially at the old town gates and at the entrances to the Temple Mount (Haram al-Sharif).
