US President Joe Biden opened the conference yesterday and promised to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% to 52% compared to 2005 emission levels. In doing so, Biden returns America to the forefront of the global fight against climate change, three months after replacing retired Donald Trump From the Paris Climate Agreement.
"The price of inaction continues to rise. The United States is not waiting," Biden said at the opening of the summit, which opened at the same time as World Earth Day.
"We must rise and act, all of us. This is the decade in which we must make decisions that will prevent the most serious consequences of the climate crisis."
