Despite the traffic restrictions linked to the health crisis, the road safety report indicates that 24 people have died from

" You are in my heart.

Niko.

I love you.

It's one of the words of love, written on a sheet of a school notebook.

There are others, just as touching, as well as photos and the broad smile of the victim, hanging on a tree on Boulevard Jacques-Tête, in Pontoise (Val-d'Oise).

It is against this tree that this young man of 18, from Ennery, lost his life, on October 25, 2020.

Despite the care provided by the emergency services, he was to die on the spot on Sunday evening.

His two 17-year-old passengers were seriously injured, suffering from fractures including the femurs.

Their vital prognosis was then engaged.

They are both now out of the woods but still in rehabilitation.

One at home, the other in a health center.

Six pedestrians and three cyclists among the 24 victims

According to the official road safety report in the department, 24 deaths were observed on the roads of Val-d'Oise during the year 2020. An increase of 9% despite significant traffic restrictions due to confinements and curfew. There were 22 deaths in 2019 (29 in 2018, 39 in 2017). Among the victims of 2020, there was an increase in the most vulnerable users. Eight drivers were killed, but mostly six two-wheeler riders, six pedestrians, three cyclists and one scooter user. Aged 41, he was hit head-on by a young man of 21 who had overtaken a bus stopped without precaution at 60 km / h. The latter was sentenced for intentional homicide on March 30 to 2 years in prison, including 18 months suspended. The results of Val-d'Oise contrast with that of metropolitan France which in 2020 experienced its lowest level of road fatalities since the post-war period (2,550 killed).

The first figures for 2021, however, point to an improvement.

Over the first 12 weeks of the year, the results show 4 deaths on the roads.

A projection over the year would give around 17 deaths.

“These early figures may appear to be good results.

But it is necessary to wait for the figures for the whole of the first half of the year to assess the situation as best as possible, ”however tempers the prefecture of Val-d'Oise.

Especially since over this same period, 200 accidents were recorded, leaving 242 injured, including 26 hospitalized.

That is, a higher rate than that of 2019 and its 829 accidents.

In 2020, 718 accidents were recorded, less than the previous year, but with more serious consequences, suggesting in particular a higher speed of the drivers involved.

596 driver's licenses suspended during the first quarter

"Excessive or unsuitable speed is present in 15 of the 24 deaths in 2020. It is the leading cause of death", note the services of the prefecture of Val-d'Oise. This is also the case at national level, both as a trigger for the accident and as an aggravating factor. For other causes of accidents in Val-d'Oise, speed is followed by denial of priority, inattention, alcohol abuse and driving under narcotics.

"The years are difficult to compare, particularly because of the periods of confinement in 2020", however insist the state services, referring to the reduced traffic, but also the transfer to the car of public transport users to avoid the risk of contamination .

"Drivers must continue to respect the rules of conduct and vigilance on the road for their own safety and those of others", adds the prefecture.

During the first confinement, speeding had jumped. Commander Frédéric Callewaert, of CRS Autoroutière Ile-de-France-Nord, had regularly noticed motorists speeding at more than 200 km / h on the A15. "We have observed since the confinement, on our axes, a 20% increase in high speed offenses", he confided during a police check. To combat bad behavior at the wheel, the repression is clearly not weakening: 596 driving licenses were suspended during these first 12 weeks of 2021, including 179 for speeding above 40 km / h. In 2020, despite a decrease in traffic, 6,298 infractions were noted, excluding automatic speed cameras, more than 6,000 for speeding. The previous year there had been 6,829 offenses.
