Homicide, drug trafficking, conspiracy, money laundering.
For all these crimes, Orlando Marques Dos Santos (60), better known as "
Sarará
", was sentenced to 34 years in prison in Brazil.
The authorities consider Marques Dos Santos among
the 10 most important traffickers in his country
and a weighty member within the structure of the First Capital Command (PCC), the largest Brazilian criminal group, born in the prisons of São Paulo, and currently with 35 "baptized" members.
Although very few have found out, for a year and a half "
Sarará
" has been
imprisoned in the maximum security pavilion of the Ezeiza Penitentiary Complex I
awaiting his extradition trial.
He must answer for the trafficking of 200 kilograms of cocaine before the Courts of São Paulo.
Interpol detained him at the Hilton Hotel in Buenos Aires on December 18, 2019 when he arrived in the country for
medical check-ups at the Italian Hospital
, where he had been operated on for the heart in 2015.
The Brazilian does not like Ezeiza at all and it is not surprising considering that in the prisons of his country he lived in luxury and in 2001 he even
took the director of the prison
where he was staying
for a walk in his private plane
.
While waiting for the extradition trial date (which could be set for May), "
Sarará
" requested his release more than once in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
And the last attempt was this week.
His lawyer, Fernando Burlando, asked to be released from prison and allowed to move to the apartment that "
Sarará
" owns on the 33rd floor of Torres Mulieris, at Azucena Villaflor 489, Puerto Madero, along with his young Bolivian girlfriend.
The place undoubtedly has more amenities than Ezeiza: luxury apartments, outdoor and indoor pools, changing rooms with sauna, 16 high-speed elevators and car wash.
The proposal was made by the defense on Tuesday and already on Wednesday Judge Sebastián Ramos - in agreement with the prosecutor - rejected it for a simple reason:
the true risk of flight
.
Red circular
Marques Dos Santos arrived in Argentina as a fugitive from the Brazilian Justice (the red circular is dated August 2, 2018) with a false document that said he was a Bolivian citizen named Julio César Cardozo.
Not even when he was in front of Judge Ramos did he admit his true identity.
It was necessary to check his fingerprints to confirm that it was Orlando Marques Dos Santos.
With that false document he had already successfully traveled through Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina.
Also with that identity, he began to be treated in 2015 at the Italian Hospital.
There they operated on his heart and due to his heart problems he visited Buenos Aires periodically for check-ups.
The December 2019 trip, in which he was detained at the Hilton Hotel in Puerto Madero, was precisely
intended to visit his doctors.
An almost identical move in relation to his health had been made at the time by the Colombian drug lord Ignacio Álvarez Meyendorff, extradited to the United States in 2013.
"Nacho" -rooted in Argentina with his entire family- moved with two simultaneous identities, each with its corresponding ID.
It was even managed with two OSDE cards, the Social Work of Executives.
At the Favaloro Foundation, where he was treated, two medical records were opened to control a kidney transplant and his intense diabetes.
When he was arrested, it was a mess to do a medical follow-up.
"Sarará" and "Marcola"
In his multiple years in different prisons in São Paulo (from which he escaped twice, in 1997 and in 2014), Orlando Marques Dos Santos befriended and "compadre" with Marco Willians Herbas Camacho (52, alias "Marcola") , number one of the First Capital Command (PCC).
The links between "Sarará" and "Marcola" are very close.
Dos Santos' son-in-law, Gilberto Aparecido Dos Santos (alias "Fuminho"), is considered the right hand of "Marcola".
Willians Herbas, "Marcola".
In 2018, after killing three heads of the PCC from the Ceará faction (a state located in the northeast of Brazil), "Fuminho" went with his wife (the daughter of "Sarará") and his daughter to Africa, a continent in the that they
put tons of drugs with his father-in-law
.
According to Brazilian press reports, before settling in Africa, "Fuminho" made a stop in Argentina.
Here he took a Lufthansa plane that took him out of America.
He settled in Mozambique, a part of lusopartante Africa, colonized by the Portuguese, and with a long tradition with Brazil.
There he was detained in April 2020.
In his absence, "Sarará" was in charge of
organizing the cocaine and marijuana trafficking,
traveling with different identities to Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina.
According to specialists, although the PCC managed to become strong in Paraguay, in Argentina there are no certain records of its influence in prisons, the place par excellence where the organization establishes its power.
