Liang Yiu-chung, who was elected as a district councillor to start a political career in 1985, was sentenced to 8 months in prison with a one-year probation for participating in the unapproved demonstration of the anti-amendment "flowing rally" on August 18 of the previous year.
As the prisoner was sentenced to more than 3 months, his legislative council and district council seats were lost, ending his 36-year parliamentary career.
He expressed his thoughts on social media today, stating that seats can be taken away, but no one can take away the 36 years of ideals and persistence.
He said that he participated in the establishment of "street workers" civil society, serving the neighborhood, workers, disadvantaged groups and grassroots citizens for many years, and doing his best for Hong Kong's democratic system. He never regrets the hard work and experience he has put in the past.
Liang Yaozhong also pointed out that the establishment of "street workers" was his life's painstaking efforts, and his enthusiasm for working with workers has never diminished at all. From only one regional office to the current seven service centers, it shows that "street workers" have been committed. The spirit of serving the community is unwavering.
And Liang Yaozhong's enthusiasm for working with workers has never diminished in the slightest, promoting and assisting the development of "street workers", and the ideal of serving the grassroots has always been the same.
He said that even if he loses his status as a councillor, he will still work hard to maintain the operation of "street workers."
In the end, he wished the people join hands and persevere, thanked all parties for their support, and wished Hong Kong a bright future.
