Peru's Council of Ministers approved requests to the United States for the extradition of former President Alejandro Toledo and his wife, Elaine Karp, to be tried in the country, Justice Minister Eduardo Vega announced on Wednesday.

Toledo was president of Peru between 2001 and 2006.

Two requests to be tried in Peru

This is the second extradition request approved in Peru against the president and corresponds to the case known as Ecoteva.

The first, for the Odebrecht case, awaits the response of the justice in the US Toledo is under house arrest in California for this second case and for which in 2019 he began his appearance before the US courts.

This process will define whether Toledo is extradited to be tried in his country.

CNN contacted Alejandro Toledo on Friday, who said he had "no comment" on the query regarding the decision taken in Peru.

This Thursday, his wife, Eliane Karp, had answered the same.

The ex-president and his wife have always pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.

Why does the Peruvian justice require Toledo?

Alejando Toledo has two orders of preventive detention for extradition purposes, requested by the Prosecutor's Office and approved by the Judiciary.

Ecoteva case

The first investigation that was initiated against Toledo was for the case known as Ecoteva for the alleged crime of money laundering.

In this case, he is being investigated for the purchase of two properties in Lima and the payment of mortgages on two assets owned by the former president.

Odebrecht case

The Prosecutor's Office maintains that the Odebrecht company gave the Israeli businessman Josef Maiman, a friend of the former president, US $ 30 million for Toledo in exchange for favoring Odebrecht in the tender for an infrastructure work.

The charges in this case are money laundering and influence peddling.

Maiman became an effective collaborator in the Toledo investigation.

The theory of the Prosecutor's Office is that both cases constitute one, that is to say that the money with which Toledo supposedly bought his properties is the one that Odebrecht allegedly gave Josef Maiman.

As follows?

The extradition requests approved by the Council of Ministers for the Ecoteva and Odebrecht cases correspond to the procedures that must be carried out in Peru, to request Toledo's presence in the country.

It is up to the US courts to decide whether or not he will be extradited to Peru.
