Welcome to the Oscars edition of the Pop Life Chronicles newsletter.

Even before the envelopes are opened, the 93rd Academy Awards have already left their mark with some historic firsts.

The show will take place this Sunday, but read on to find out why you should get out the popcorn and start celebrating now.

Women in Directing:

There have been many years in which not a single woman has been nominated for best director.

This year there are two.

Chloé Zhao, who won the Golden Globe for best director in March, is nominated for "Nomadland" (which is also nominated for best picture).

And Emerald Fennell is a candidate for her movie "Promising Young Woman."

Emerald Fennell attends the BAFTA Los Angeles + BBC America TV Tea Party at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on September 21, 2019.

Seventy women received a total of 76 nominations, according to the Academy, an absolute record for any one year.

All-Black Production Team:

For the first time, one of the Best Picture nominees features an all-black production team.

Director Shaka King records scene for "Judas and the Black Messiah."

"Judas and the Black Messiah," directed by Shaka King, is nominated for best picture and focuses on the true story of the leader of the Black Panthers, Fred Hampton (played by Daniel Kaluuya), and William O'Neal (played by LaKeith Stanfield), the man who infiltrated the political organization at the behest of the United States government.

Both Kaluuya and Stanfield are nominated for best supporting actor, along with fellow black Leslie Odom Jr. for his role in "One Night in Miami."

Asian Representation:

Not only is Zhao the first Asian woman of color to be nominated as a director, but there are others who also achieve firsts.

South Korean-born American actor Steven Yeun is the first man of Asian descent to earn a best actor nomination for his work in "Minari," which is also nominated for best picture as a novelty.

Yeun's co-star Yuh-jung Youn is the first Korean woman to be nominated for best supporting actress.

Queen Viola:

With her Best Actress nomination for her performance in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," Viola Davis became the most Oscar-nominated black actress in history, with four career nominations.

A moment for Muslim actors:

Anthony Hopkins as Anthony in Florian Zeller's film adaptation of his own play "The Father."

Sir Anthony Hopkins:

At 83, he is the oldest nominee for best actor in history, a title already held by Richard Farnsworth when he was nominated at age 79 for "The Straight Story" more than 20 years ago.

For the weekend

Three things to see:

On the eve of Sunday's Oscars, why limit yourself?

This week, I'm going to cheat a bit and encourage you to watch as many best picture nominees as you can to get ready for the big day.

Start with my favorites.

All of these films touch on something that is currently in full swing in our country: the economy, race relations, and the immigrant experience.

Nomadland

Frances McDormand stars in the movie «Nomadland».

Frances McDormand is exceptional in every role she plays, and this movie is no exception.

In the role of a widow traveling the country in search of paid work, she finds a community unlike any other, not "homeless" but "homeless."

The film gives new meaning to the concept that home is where the heart is.

"Judas and the Black Messiah"

(From left to right) Daniel Kaluuya, Ashton Sanders, Algee Smith, Dominique Thorne and LaKeith Stanfield appear in a scene from "Judas and the Black Messiah."

Stanfield appear in a scene from "Judas and the Black Messiah."

Fred Hampton was only 21 years old when he was gunned down by authorities in his Chicago apartment in 1969.

Daniel Kaluuya embodies the spirit of Hampton as a leader of the Black Panthers working for racial justice and economic parity in his community.

LaKeith Stanfield is just as skilled as the man hired by the FBI to betray Hampton, even when the informant comes to admire the ill-fated political activist.

"Minari"

(From left to right) Alan S. Kim as David and Steven Yeun as Jacob star in "Minari."

A Korean family moves to rural Arkansas to pursue the American dream in this heartwarming film.

It is a struggle, but along the way lessons of family, tradition and community are learned.

These works are some of the best of the year.

Here you can stream all the nominees for best film.
