WASHINGTON - SANA US President Joe Biden officially recognized today that Armenians were subjected to genocide during the Ottoman era

Washington-SANA

Today, US President Joe Biden has officially recognized the Armenian genocide during the Ottoman era.

Reuters quoted Biden as saying in a statement issued by the US administration that "the massacre that the Armenians were subjected to in the late Ottoman Empire, which began with the arrest of their thinkers and leaders on April 24, 1915, constitutes genocide."

"The American people honor the Armenians who were killed by the genocide that began on this day 106 years ago," the statement said, adding, "We confirm history ... we do not do this to blame anyone, but to ensure that what happened will not be repeated."

Thus Biden becomes the first president of the United States to describe the killing of about one and a half million Armenians by the Ottomans between 1915 and 1923 as genocide.

It is noteworthy that the US Congress recognized the Armenian Genocide in 2019 in a symbolic vote, but then US President Donald Trump refused to use this phrase and only spoke about "one of the worst mass atrocities of the twentieth century."
