He cycles around the world and promotes the use of hydrogen: Antoine Abou from France.

These days he met the hydrogen expert Stephen Harrison from Gelting.

Gelting - At the end of September 2020, the then 22-year-old student Antoine Abou set out on an e-bike in his French hometown of Lyon on a special tour.

His goal: to meet hydrogen experts all over Europe and North Africa to advertise this future technology on social networks.

After about 5500 kilometers, Abou stopped in Gelting.

The family of Stephen Harrison, who is a recognized expert on hydrogen and decarbonization, lives there.

In an interview with our employee Peter Herrmann, Abou reports on his impressions so far and explains, together with Harrison, why the use of hydrogen can be an essential building block for the energy transition.

Mr. Abou, how did you come up with the idea of founding your “Cycling4Planet” project?

Antoine Abou:

I met a hydrogen expert in Brussels before my tour and was so enthusiastic afterwards that I specialized in this topic and now want to learn more about it.

How many people have you met in the past eight months?

Antoine Abou:

Around 170, including managing directors of international hydrogen pioneering companies and companies such as Toyota and Linde.

What did you remember most on your tour so far?

Antoine Abou:

In Sweden I once had to change a defective tire on my e-bike when the outside temperature was minus 15 degrees.

There and with other small mishaps, I was always lucky that someone helped me.

In Denmark I only drove on the beach for a long distance.

That was impressive.

Where will you stay overnight on your tour?

Antoine Abou:

Often in the tent or with the hydrogen experts I visit.

Mr. Harrison, you grew up in Cornwall / England and have lived with your family in Gelting since 2015.

How did you come into contact with Abou?

Stephen Harrison:

Abou asked if he could visit me through the professional network LinkedIn.

I accepted immediately.

What are the advantages of hydrogen over fossil fuels?

Stephen Harrison:

This technology is versatile and, above all, climate-friendly because it does not cause air pollution.

In this way, CO2 emissions in industry and transport can be significantly reduced.

In order to achieve sustainable climate protection, hydrogen is of course not the only solution - but a very important one.

Back to you, Mr Abou, what are your next goals?

Antoine Abou:

After meeting Stephen, I want to visit the Geretsried liquefied gas company Tyczka and later arrive in North Africa via Austria and Italy.

Because countries like Algeria or Morocco are also suitable for the production of hydrogen.

So in total I will have covered around 10,000 kilometers by bike.
