US President Joe Biden announced today (Saturday) that Washington will recognize the massacre of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire in World War I as genocide.

This, a day after he informed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of his intention.

Biden said he sees Turkey, a member of NATO, as an ally and that he seeks to strengthen the relationship between the two countries. He added that the declaration was not aimed at blaming, but at respecting the victims and ensuring that similar cases never return. It has been said that the United States will continue to encourage Armenia and Turkey to act for reconciliation.

Turkish Foreign Minister Walut Kabusoglo responded by saying that in Ankara the "populist" claims of the US president were rejected.

"No one will teach us about our past. Political opportunism is equivalent to betraying peace and justice."

An official statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry said the statement had no legal validity and that it could "open deep wounds in relations between the two countries. Turkish citizens will never accept the US statement, which distorts history."

A statement from the presidential palace said the United States should "look first at its own past."

Historical recognition.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lior Hayat said today in response to President Biden's declaration: "The State of Israel recognizes the terrible suffering and tragedy of the Armenian people. Especially these days it is our responsibility and the countries of the world to make sure that such events do not recur." The statement continues the line Israel has taken over the years in which it refers to "suffering" and "tragedy" for the Armenian massacre, but unlike the United States, does not define it as "genocide."

The political system received sympathetic reactions to the recognition of the President of the United States. Chairman of Yesh Atid Yair Lapid said that this is "an important moral statement by President Biden. I will continue to fight for Israeli recognition of the Armenian Genocide. This is our moral responsibility as the state of the Jews. "

MK Tamar Zandberg (Meretz) said that the next step is Israeli recognition of the genocide: "This is a historical recognition of one of the most heinous crimes of humanity.

It is time for Israel to cleanse itself of political interests, work for the most basic justice - and recognize the Armenian genocide.

The state of the Jewish people must not give in to attempts to erase history. "

To this day the massacres have been carefully called by the White House "the great evil."

Turkey acknowledges that many Armenians living within the empire were killed in clashes with Ottoman forces during World War I, but it claims the numbers were much lower and denied that the killings were systematic and genocide.

For decades, proposals to recognize the Armenian genocide were stuck in Congress and Presidents of the United States refrained from using the term because of fear of harming relations with Turkey, now with NATO, and in light of the pressure on the part of Ankara.

In -2019 Senate passed a non-binding sale Hharmnim killings as genocide A Democratic congressman, Adam Schiff, and a group of 100 lawmakers from both parties sent a letter to Biden this week calling on him to keep his campaign promise and "correct decades of mistakes."
