The full moon is an ordinary astronomical phenomenon, but next Tuesday (27th) will usher in a different full moon "super full moon".

The Observatory explained that the "super full moon" refers to the full moon when the moon moves to the nearest point in the elliptical orbit.

Therefore, the moon will look bigger than usual.

However, according to forecasts, the Observatory is expected to be cloudy with a few showers next Tuesday, and it may be difficult for the public to enjoy the moon.

Even if you miss this "super full moon", citizens need not be disappointed, because the "super full moon" will appear again on the 26th of next month. In addition to being the largest full moon of the year, it will also usher in a rare total lunar eclipse.

At that time, when sunlight passes through the earth’s atmosphere, only the remaining red light will be refracted to the surface of the moon, and the moon will appear red, so the total lunar eclipse is also called the "blood moon."

Observatory: The chance of seeing the moon on Tuesday is so slim

According to the Observatory's data, since the moon's orbit around the earth is elliptical, the distance between the moon and the earth will vary from time to time. The point of the moon's orbit farthest from the earth is called "apogee" and the closest point is "perigee.

The "super full moon" refers to the full moon when the moon moves to the nearest point in the elliptical orbit.

Therefore, the moon will look bigger than usual.

Li Hongjun, scientific director of the Observatory, said that "super full moon" is not an astronomical term, but is used to describe the phenomenon that the moon looks larger before and after the full moon.

The moonrise next Tuesday will be 7:04 pm; the moonset will be 5:56 am.

Lai also pointed out that the Observatory expected that a trough of low pressure would bring unstable weather that day, so "the chance of seeing the moon is very slim."

As for how much the moon will look bigger than usual by then?

Li Hongjun said with a smile that, in fact, it is difficult to detect changes in the size of the moon with the naked eye.

The super full moon collided with the total lunar eclipse on May 26 and appeared as a "super blood moon"

If you miss the "Super Full Moon" next Tuesday, you will have another chance to enjoy it on May 26. The rare total lunar eclipse "Blood Moon" will appear on that day.

According to the Observatory's data, a shadow appears on the earth in the direction away from the sun, which is called "earth shadow".

The shadow of the earth is divided into two parts: the umbra and the penumbra.

The umbra refers to a place that is not exposed to direct sunlight, while the penumbra is only exposed to part of the direct sunlight.

When the moon is orbiting the earth, if the entire moon enters the umbra, a total lunar eclipse will occur.

During a total lunar eclipse, the moon is not completely invisible, and because the sun’s rays are refracted into the umbra when passing through the earth’s atmosphere and projected on the lunar surface, the lunar surface is copper-colored, so the total lunar eclipse is also called It is the "Blood Moon".

The cold front will kill the Observatory next week. It is expected that it will rain for 5 consecutive days, and the weather will reach 31 degrees on Labor Day.
