At least 82 people perished in a fire that broke out last night (Sunday) at a hospital in Baghdad where corona patients are being treated, a Interior Ministry spokesman said. An additional 110 people were injured in the fire, which reportedly broke out following an accident in which it exploded from any oxygen tank. Documents were posted on social media showing firefighters struggling to take control of the fire while people fled the building.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Khazimi called for an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the "tragic accident" and suspended the health minister. "Such an incident is evidence of neglect and so I order an immediate investigation and the arrest of the hospital director and heads of security and maintenance until we identify those responsible for this neglect and prosecute them," he said.

Medical sources said that even patients who were not injured in the fire were transferred outside Even Khatib Hospital in the area of the Diala Bridge.

The head of Iraq's civil defense said the fire on the floor of lung patients was being treated.

Some of the families of the victims were in the hospital hours after the fire was extinguished, after failing to locate them elsewhere.

Hospitals in Iraq suffered heavy loads even before the outbreak of the corona, in part because of years of wars, neglect and government corruption.

Since February, there has been a sharp increase in the number of patients with the virus, and their number has exceeded one million, with more than 15,000 deaths recorded since the outbreak.

"We must urgently review the safety measures in all hospitals to prevent the recurrence of such painful accidents in the future," Interior Ministry spokesman Khalid al-Mohana told official television, announcing the death toll.

An eyewitness who visited his brother at the time of the fire said people jumped out of windows to escape the fire that quickly spread.

About a month ago, Iraq launched a vaccination campaign against Corona, receiving 650,000 vaccine doses.

These were obtained through the COVAX project, an international initiative that helps developing and third world countries to launch vaccination campaigns.
