Longyuan is the largest contiguous freshwater wetland in Hong Kong. The government plans to develop about 37 hectares of land in its core area into a natural ecological park, which is divided into three areas, including an "ecological zone" covering about 21 hectares and about 11 hectares The "agricultural area" and the "visitor area" of about 5 hectares.

The Longyuan Natural Ecological Park was built by the Land Development Department, and the Fisheries and Conservation Department is responsible for the future management of the park.

Zhou Xialu, an engineer from the Department of Land Development, added that the "ecological zone" in the park will maintain the biodiversity of the highland through the planting of designated crops and habitat management; the "agricultural zone" will allow farmers to cultivate in an ecologically friendly manner; the "visitor zone" Visitor facilities will be provided to allow the public to understand and appreciate the ecology of the Longyuan wetland, and to raise awareness of nature conservation.
The department will also improve the irrigation waterways in Longyuan, construct a purified wetland, and improve the quality of irrigation water in the park by means of sedimentation, plant filtration and sterilization by the sun.
Storage rooms will be set up at different locations in the park to allow farmers to store simple farm tools and equipment.
The Longyuan Natural Ecological Park will be divided into three areas, including "Ecological Area", "Agricultural Area" and "Visitor Area".

Restoration of dry land and abandoned farmland into wetland habitat
