For the sixth consecutive day, the People's Assembly members continued to present their written support to the candidates for the elections

Damascus-Sana

For the sixth consecutive day, the members of the People's Assembly continued to submit written support to the candidates for the elections to the position of President of the Republic, with the number of presidential candidacy applications sent by the Supreme Constitutional Court to the People's Assembly to 21.

The General Elections Law stipulates that an application to run for the office of President of the Republic is not accepted unless the applicant has written support for his candidacy from at least 35 members of the People's Assembly, and none of these members may support more than one candidate.

The process of granting written confirmations takes place in a special room within the council’s building in the presence of the Speaker of the People’s Assembly, where a member of the council records his name in a special register and takes from the president of the council the blank endorsement paper stamped with the seal of the council and the signature of its president then enters the secret room prepared to fill in the data on the support paper and includes the name of the candidate who He wants to support him, then puts the paper in a special envelope and seals it with a laser tag and puts it in the affirmations box.

After the deadline for the written confirmations process expires, the fund is sealed and sent to the Supreme Constitutional Court, which supervises the electoral process and undertakes the legal study of candidacy applications and decides on them within the five days following the expiration of their submission period at the most, and then announces the names of those whose candidacy has been accepted.

The Speaker of the People's Assembly announced the opening of candidacy for the presidential elections, in implementation of the provisions of the constitution, starting from last Monday, and applications for candidacy will continue to be submitted to the Supreme Constitutional Court until the end of the official working hours from Wednesday April 28, 2021.
