Sylt welcomes tourists again from May 1st as part of a model project.

You can find out which rules apply to island vacations despite the corona pandemic here.

On Thursday (April 22nd) the Sylt community representatives decided to take part in the model project of the North Friesland district.

The four municipalities on the island of List, Kampen, Wenningstedt-Braderup and Hörnum had previously approved the district concept.

Sylt originally wanted to start its own model project with stricter measures - but that failed due to a lack of legal framework conditions.

When it

opens on May 1st, the

same rules for tourists apply in the district of North Friesland and Sylt, as reported by the NDR.

Which corona rules apply to holidays on Sylt?

If you want to spend your vacation on Sylt or generally in the district of North Friesland, you have to get

tested for the corona virus every two days

. Sylt Marketing also informs that certain requirements apply to overnight stays in participating accommodation providers: Among other things, a mandatory

written declaration of commitment

and a

negative test result on arrival are

required

which is not older than 48 hours, as well as the mentioned testing every 48 hours. According to the NDR, rapid tests are also allowed. According to Sylt Marketing, guests with full vaccination protection are exempt from the test requirement. In addition, tourists could visit participating catering establishments subject to the same rules. The district of North Friesland also declares on its website that the private landlord with individual holiday apartments who rents them to third parties is also considered an accommodation provider. A list of the participating companies is still to be published.

The model project is initially limited to May 31st, an

extension by the month of June is possible

.

In addition, May 1st is not a guaranteed start date, as the Nordfriesland district continues to explain on the website.

If the pandemic continues to worsen by then,

the project can be postponed or canceled

.

In addition, the project would be closely monitored and possibly canceled if the 7-day incidence exceeds 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants during the period.

At an incidence of 100 over three days, all loosening would immediately cease to exist.

Critical voices from Sylt on the model project

According to NDR, there were concerns about participating in the model project on the part of the Sylt local politician Lars Schmidt from the “Future” party.

According to a self-initiated, non-representative survey, 60 percent of those questioned rejected an opening.

The SPD also voted against the model project.

Kay Abeling (CDU) said, according to the report, that the municipality of Sylt could not have decided otherwise after the smaller villages had already pushed forward.

Greens and SSW were also in favor of the opening.

The Schlei region with Eckernförde, on the other hand, started its model project on April 19 *, making it the first region in Schleswig-Holstein to reopen to tourists.
