The students and employees of the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) campus in Martinsried and Großhadern are preparing for another exceptional semester.

Due to the corona, most lectures and exercises are also offered digitally in summer.

Parts of the campus are closed.

Martinsried / Großhadern

- Most of the biology, chemistry / pharmacy and medicine students who are taught on campus traditionally begin their studies in the winter semester.

Nevertheless, there are now 106 new medical students, 53 beginners in chemistry and pharmacy, 14 in biology.

According to the preliminary figures from the LMU, a total of 6563 students study at the medical faculty, 1889 chemistry and pharmacy and 2055 biology in the summer semester.

Shortened face-to-face internships

At the Faculty of Biology, “all of the courses are offered digitally,” says LMU spokeswoman Katrin Röder.

However, depending on the corona situation, shortened face-to-face internships in small groups are possible.

Individual research internships and graduation theses are also carried out in person.

In principle, however, the following applies: What does not necessarily have to be done on site has been converted to digital - and those who do not want to come to the few face-to-face exercises do not have to do so either.

Open day digital

“The research takes place both in person and in the home office.

Experiments are carried out in the laboratories and affiliated institutes, evaluations can also be carried out from a distance, ”explains Röder.

The building of the Faculty of Biology, for example, is closed to external persons and guests.

Public events take place digitally, such as the open house in 2020 and probably also in 2021, as well as seminars in which first-year students can find out more about subjects.

The chemistry / pharmacy and medicine faculties have also organized almost everything online.

Regulations for the entire summer semester

As in all of Bavaria, the regulations will probably not be changed over the summer semester, even if the vaccination rates rise significantly.

"Even if some students are vaccinated, the law still applies the hygiene rules such as keeping your distance, because only a few students are allowed into a lecture hall," explains Röder.

The summer semester also ends in July, which means that changes would only apply for a few weeks from June, but at the same time would involve a lot of effort for employees and students.

Exceptional operation on campus

Overall, the campus is still completely exceptional. The Martinsrieder StuBistro is only open for to-go operations. The cafeteria in Martinsried is completely closed. After the current renovation, the StuBistro of the Faculty of Chemistry / Pharmacy will probably reopen in May, but then only for to-go operation. “The libraries are open, but only for borrowing. The buildings with teaching operations, for example the teaching wing at the Biomedical Center, are closed and are only opened on a daily basis for large face-to-face exams in some areas, ”reports Katrin Röder. Otherwise these buildings are only accessible to students with registration. The institute buildings have different locking regulations. Also at the newly built Institute for Chemical Epigenetics, which should have been handed over to LMU last year and then in spring, there are further corona-related delays. “The handover is now planned for September 2021,” says Katrin Röder.
