The Bogotá health authorities declared a "red alert" for covid-19 in the city on Sunday and extended a general quarantine due to the level of transmissibility and occupation of intensive care units (ICUs).

According to data from the Bogotá Health Observatory, which records the figures for the pandemic in the Colombian capital, the occupancy of ICUs for covid in the city is 89.6%.

The mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López, together with the health authorities, reported new measures to contain the spread of the virus.

López announced the prohibition of the sale of alcohol in Bogotá from Monday, April 26 to May 9, and said that no meetings will be allowed.

"I beg the people, all of us here have made a sacrifice, the crowds are a threat to life, we are between life and death," Mayor López said at a press conference.

Suspension of classes in Bogotá

«We suspend the gradual return to gardens and schools of the public and private system from tomorrow April 26 until Sunday May 9.

Two weeks in a row, face-to-face classes will be suspended;

everything must be 100% online, "he said.

A curfew was also imposed for Monday at 8 pm and ordered that "all public businesses, of any kind, must be completely closed at 7 pm."

"This is the first time since April of last year that we are faced with the possibility of this growing in such a way that the city's hospital system collapses," he added.

On April 24, the Ministry of Health confirmed 4,353 new cases of covid-19 in Bogotá.

In Colombia, 27.7% of all cases are located in the capital.

The city has recorded a total of 763,255 cases since the pandemic began.

“We continue to have a great margin of uncertainty;

next Thursday at 2 pm we will re-evaluate how we are, "added Mayor López.

The red alert announcement in Bogotá comes after Colombia's Ministry of Health recorded a record number of daily deaths across the country for the third day in a week.

In the country, 462 people died from the virus in the last 24 hours, according to the ministry.
