Moscow - Russian authorities continue to take action against the imprisoned opposition politician and Kremlin critic Alexej Navalny *.

A court in Moscow has banned the 44-year-old's organizations from working, the director of Navalny's anti-corruption foundation, Ivan Zhdanov, announced on Monday.

The work ban is an interim solution that will apply until a decision by the Moscow public prosecutor's office is made as to whether the Nawalnys organizations should be classified as extremist.

If the organizations of the Kremlin critic were actually classified as extremist and terrorist, that would amount to a ban.

Behind this could be the tactical calculation of Russia's President Vladimir Putin, who would virtually eliminate the opposition before the upcoming parliamentary elections in September.

Navalny is one of the most prominent Russian opposition politicians and a bitter opponent of President Vladimir Putin *.

His foundation has repeatedly uncovered cases of corruption in recent years.

Most recently, it made headlines in January with a report on a huge luxury estate on the Black Sea that is said to belong to Putin.

Navalny still detained - 44-year-old announces end of hunger strike

Alexej Navalny is still in a Russian prison camp and has recently caused concern mainly through reports about his health.

The 44-year-old is denied treatment by his doctors, which is why Navalny last went on a hunger strike to protest the conditions of his detention.

At the weekend, however, the Kremlin critic announced that he wanted to end his strike based on the circumstances and recommendations from doctors.

After the 44-year-old had just survived an attack with the warfare agent Novichok * last year, he was sentenced to more than two and a half years in a camp on his return to Russia * for alleged violations of probation conditions.
