The municipality of Eching has long seen an urgent need for action in terms of road safety on the St2339 for the bus stops at the old brickworks in Günzenhausen.

Eching / Günzenhausen

- At the old brickworks in the Günzenhausen part of the municipality, the buses have to stop on the lane, and only a narrow strip of meadow is available for the passengers. Due to this "serious safety deficit", a total of five modification variants were presented last year and weighed up both with regard to a "safety check" and with a view to the estimated total costs. Now the subject came back on the agenda of the April meeting in the Building, Planning and Environment Committee - in connection with bad news. The solution favored by Eching's councils with reasonable costs, which includes two stop extensions to the left and right of the street and a central traffic island on the roadway as a crossing aid, cannot be implemented in the desired way. Reason:The strip of land required for the redesign (private property) on the south side is not for sale. Mayor Sebastian Thaler reported that the owner was not ready to sell the necessary space along the street in the area of the sloping banquet. If one now wants to pursue the desired optimization, a supporting wall at the side must secure the sloping terrain, which then results in total costs of around 600,000 euros - a sum that the building committee members consider clearly too high for the upgrading of a bus stop.If one now wants to pursue the desired optimization, a supporting wall at the side must secure the sloping terrain, which then results in total costs of around 600,000 euros - a sum that the building committee members consider clearly too high for the upgrading of a bus stop.If one now wants to pursue the desired optimization, a supporting wall at the side must secure the sloping terrain, which then results in total costs of around 600,000 euros - a sum that the building committee members consider clearly too high for the upgrading of a bus stop.

There was fierce struggle in the local council to find alternative solutions, and Lena Haussmann (Greens) even brought an expropriation into play. One process, however, was not considered to be very promising and, as a precedent in the past has shown, is also likely to be extremely lengthy and therefore not an option.

Carsten Seiffert (SPD) campaigned for the bus stops to be relocated to the “Alte Ziegelei” settlement on the local private road, which requires the - expected - consent of the residents. This location would also have the advantage of lower costs and only one stopping point required for both directions of travel. However, this proposal is rigorously and unequivocally rejected by the bus drivers, because the re-entry onto the state road - especially when turning left - is considered to be accident prone due to the extremely confusing road layout with the subsequent curve and hilltop.

Now, as a supplementary idea, the possibility of a traffic light switch for the incoming and outgoing buses was added as a saving idea - and was recorded as desirable. Where what can be done and to what extent, in addition to the construction of an urgently required connecting cycle path from Günzenhausen to the Alte Ziegelei, is, in addition to the difficult land issues, above all a question of money.

The municipality of Eching sees it as the duty of the road construction authority, which is the building contractor for a state road.

And up to now, as Mayor Sebastian Thaler reported, there has been little willingness to provide financial support for a cycle path in the talks.

Thaler regretted that the authority sees itself exclusively as a road construction authority, not a cycle path construction authority.

It was unanimously decided to clarify not only the traffic-related options but also the financial options with the district office before a final decision is taken on the way or the road.
