The Haifa District Court sentenced this morning (Monday) 17 years in prison and one year probation on Shahar Rimoni, a 21-year-old released resident of Carmel, who last June raped an 11-year-old girl, during a burglary at her home in the Neve Sha'anan neighborhood of the city. Rimoni broke into the family home in early June last year and tried to steal the family car, but for fear of hearing an alarm he returned to the apartment, he entered the girl's room and sexually assaulted her. At the start of the trial, Rimonie claimed temporary insanity, but a psychiatric examination conducted on him revealed that he was fit to stand trial. He was already known to police before the rape case, though from a series of burglaries and property offenses rather than sex offenses.

Prior to the conviction, Rimoni's defense attorney, Adv. Eli Saban, made it clear that he had read and explained to his client the facts of the indictment more than once: "He understands well what is written in it and admits when he is aware that the sentence will be whatever the court may be." Then Rimoni himself, who spoke to the court in a conference call from the Sharon prison where he is being held, confirmed the things, and his parents sat in the courtroom and listened.

"The defendant, who is very sorry for his actions, chose from the beginning to follow a path that would not harm the complainant and her family," Saban told Walla !, "He stood today and confessed to everything attributed to him, without the prosecution reducing any offense or word. He is aware he will pay a price for his actions "But today what is in front of his eyes and of course his family is to try and repair even a little bit of the damage and injustice he caused to the complainant."
