The Uffingen municipal council has cleared the way for a new leisure facility.

The cost is 185,000 euros.

  • Uffing will get a new attraction in the foreseeable future.

  • The local council approved the construction of a new leisure facility on Rigistraße.

  • There had been a public survey beforehand.

Uffing

- Uffing in the evening is an attraction in itself.

The Seestrasse is transformed, in dry weather of course, into an endless course for skateboard, scooter or bicycle artists who practice their tricks until they have to go home and to bed.

On Thursday, a man in his 40s was seen chasing across the asphalt on a board.

It was Christian Krämer who was just rolling to the council meeting.

His daughter, he says, also likes to drive.

Citizens were involved

Krämer, along with a few other children and parents, campaigns for their own facility. They call this project Sportplatz 2.0 - a sports field next to the sports field with a basketball field, circuit and obstacles for everything that has wheels, i.e. for bicycles, mountain bikes, scooters, roller skates, skateboards, and even for wheelchairs. Since last week, these ideas are no longer a vision but a real plan. The local council voted unanimously in favor of the new leisure facility next to the soccer field on Rigistraße and at the same time released the money (EUR 80,000 communal share). This vote could be seen as a success for the working group - but in reality it is much more than that. Uffing, and that means everyone involved, has achieved what can usually only be read on campaign slips during the election campaign. The village has let its citizens participate in politics - even the youngest ones. A working group made up of local councilors and parents was initiated by two local schoolchildren. They organized a survey that, firstly, revealed needs that - let's be honest - everyone had known about anyway, and secondly, it was a lesson for critics who fail to recognize the little interest in politics. Of 320 Uffingers between the ages of 8 and 18 who were contacted, 225 filled out the questionnaire on the Internet - over 70 percent. “You can pat yourselves on the shoulder,” says Markus Kölling, the local youth worker. "This is how we imagine participation." Almost half of them wanted nothing more than a bike and skate facility,a huge proportion already drives several kilometers to neighboring towns and only a small proportion (25 of 161 who answered the question) expressed concerns.

Professional takes away the fear

The opinion of the youth was also essential for a third reason: The initiative had not met with consensus everywhere in the village. Many people feared for the clubs and their future. They warned against club cannibalism in your own village, a competition that you create yourself. The topic reveals a certain potential for divisions because the supporters include some new citizens. Nobody can need or want a break in the village. Markus Kölling, the specialist, took away everyone's fear. Competition for the clubs? “A clear no,” he emphasizes. Rather, the municipality is expanding the existing offer. Young people were looking for a meeting room that was not regulated or monitored at the moment. They desire the unorganized, the free. “Such systems are the ideal option. With a system like this, we can say: Uffing is tackling it. "

Supporters everywhere

The Bavarian strategy, explains Kölling, is even targeting similar projects so that young people can develop a bond with their place of residence. “With this you counteract the rural exodus to a certain extent.” Christian Wander, the spokesman for the working group, also referred to the inclusive nature of such a leisure facility. Older people can also be trained there in how to use e-bikes. Local councilor Wolfgang Mayr (WGU), skeptic in advance, reported on a trip to Weilheim a short time ago. He walked past the grounds there and saw “several generations, from small children to older adults - I was pleasantly surprised”. And convinces, like all colleagues. "Big win," said Jakob Warnstorff (We for Uffing). "Could be a meeting point," said Wolfgang Hirschvogel (We for Uffing). Supporters everywhere. Thanks to Wander's lecture. He had brought the sports field 2.0 to life for the first time, with graphics from the Schneestern company, which, among other things, had also created the snowboard and freestyle courses at the previous Winter Olympics.

Children should help

The three-part area includes half a basketball court, a pump track (i.e. a circuit with ascent and descent) and a skate park with ramps, waves and boxes that the children selected in the survey. Total costs for this space for movement and exchange: 185,000 euros net, of which 110,000 euros are covered by the EU funding program Leader and the initiative itself raises 30,000 euros, including through sponsors. The municipality pays the remaining amount as well as the tax. The children should then also help with the construction and design of the green spaces. "If you plant the trees yourself, they don't pelt there," joked Mayor Andreas Weiß (non-party). It is still unclear when construction will start. With a little luck in autumn, but more likely in spring 2022.That is how long the young Uffingers have to move to Ohlstadt or Weilheim - or to Seestrasse.
