Kyle White from the province of Saskatchewan and his wife took advantage of their time off due to the pandemic to challenge themselves to improve their health.

(CNN) -

When Kyle White and his wife, from Saskatoon in Saskatchewan, started working from home last year, they, like many Canadians, turned to Netflix and takeout to cope with the uncertainty of the onset of the pandemic, and the unusual amount of free time they had.

But when the scale read 195 kilograms, White decided it was time for a lifestyle change.

"We had more free time than we were used to and we weren't making good use of," White, 28, told CNN.

A year later, White weighs 123 kilograms.

"In no way did I set out last year to say that I was going to lose 150 pounds in one year," White said.

"It was only when I started doing it that I saw some results and started to work harder and harder," she realized that "a little bit can go a long way."

Something had to change

At 1.90 meters tall, White says he has always been a big guy.

“I have always had the mentality that I am still young.

I still have a lot of time to work on my weight and my health, ”he says.

Just before the pandemic, White's doctor raised concerns about his weight and blood pressure, White said.

He had some back pain and couldn't do a full squat without hurting his knees.

But it wasn't until the scale read 195 that White realized that "something had to be tried."

Not being a person who does a lot of exercise, White started taking little walks.

These turned into longer rides, and then races.

He says that now he loves to run and that he can do 50-60 squats without pain.

White also spoke with her doctor to find a better diet.

The doctor told her to make sure her plate resembles the Canadian food guide: 50% fruits and vegetables, 25% whole grains, and 25% protein, and that those proteins are as plant-based as possible.

White said she now follows a strictly plant-based diet.

His wife does too.

Before the pandemic, she was at risk for diabetes, but in the last year she has lost about 35 kilos and is no longer prediabetic.

Losing a lot of weight quickly can be detrimental to someone's health, but White says he undergoes regular check-ups with his doctor to make sure that doesn't happen.

Your nutrients, your cholesterol, and your blood pressure are now at normal levels.

"I was amazed that I could see such tangible progress in one year and do it relatively safely," White said.

New challenge

Kyle White now sets new goals, beyond the scale.

White said he thinks 99 to 104 kilos is a realistic goal for him, but he is no longer focusing on weight.

He said that sometime last year, his goals began to change from a number on the scale to the distance and speed he could run.

"I always wanted to lose weight, feel good and eat healthier," she said.

“When I started running, my goals were more focused on performance.

I wanted to go as far as possible, as fast as I could and set challenges for myself and meet them, and luckily those things go hand in hand.

Now, White is targeting a 10K run in June and a half marathon in September.

He also hopes to show his family his progress.

Although it has received a lot of support on the internet, only a couple of dozen people in its life have seen its results in person.

He has not been in his home province of Newfoundland for a year and a half, the longest time since he has visited.

"A hug is going to be very different," White said.
