Economy Minister Martín Guzmán said that "the best economic policy", given the second wave of coronavirus "is to get vaccines" and revealed
unique details
of the negotiation that faces the debt with the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
"Right now,
the best economic policy
for us
is to get vaccines
," the official said in an interview with the
Russia Today
channel
.
As he analyzed, this is because "it will allow us to have different levels of immunity in our population, for the level of uncertainty to go down and the
economy to be more robust
."
The minister pointed out two important facts in this regard.
First of all, the purchase of the
Sputnik V
vaccines
, which "was very important and very well received."
"There were
certain noises at the beginning
that were then totally dissipated," he added.
On the other hand, he highlighted the novelty that the production of doses will begin on Argentine soil.
"It is important, both for public health and for the economy, but for
the productive capacity
it generates for the country, to be able to increase our exports," he added in that sense.
Restructuring with the IMF, backwards
The minister surprised with an
inverse position to the logic
when negotiating with the IMF: he said that he hopes that the international organization
supports the government's proposal
.
The Minister of Economy, Martín Guzmán and the head of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, in Washington.
"The only way it works is for the program to
be completely designed by us
and
based on our vision
of what is going to do Argentina well, to put itself on the path of sustainable growth, with a stability that last in time ", assured Guzmán.
In addition, he explained that the Argentine proposal is based on "precepts on macroeconomic policy that are very different from what the previous program was and
different from what
the IMF programs
have usually been
."
"We are proposing that macroeconomic policy should be oriented to prop up the recovery that Argentina is already experiencing and not go by the motto that it is time to make a
fiscal contraction
that generates confidence in the markets and that generates more investment.
That never works
", sentenced.
"The State, coming out of a recession, must play
a countercyclical role
, prop up the recovery and, at the same time, put all the accounts in order," he continued.
Then he said that they are going to send the program to the National Congress.
"We want macroeconomic stabilization to be much more than government policy,
we want it to be state policy,
" said the minister.
And the Paris Club, too
Regarding the other open debt front, Guzmán assured that they are "around 2,400 million dollars."
"It is a process that
goes hand
in
hand
with the IMF negotiation, because many of the actors or member countries are the same ones who are the main shareholders of the IMF," he explained.
He said that they have been working constructively and what is being sought is "to avoid a shock and
reschedule those maturities
."
Martín Guzmán, on tour and negotiation.
Guzmán clarified that in this way Argentina will not arrive until May 31 (when the agreement expires) to "face a situation either of having to face 2.4 billion dollars or
an event that generates greater uncertainty
in the economy."
