Seventeen people were found dead on a boat carrying migrants off the Canary Islands, and three were rescued, Spanish sea rescue services said.

The boat was spotted some 265 nautical miles (about 500 km) southeast of the island of El Hierro, the smallest of the Canaries, and a helicopter flew to the scene to evacuate the three survivors, a specified a spokesperson.
