The chairman of the organizing committee, MK Miki Zohar, announced today (Monday) at the beginning of the discussion in the organizing committee that, in addition to the finance and foreign affairs and security committees, he is proposing to establish another temporary committee called the Arab Affairs Committee. According to him, the committee will be authorized to discuss all issues belonging to Arab society.

The committee was born as part of an agreement between the Likud and the chairman of Ra'am Mansour Abbas, in exchange for a representative of Ra'am voting with the Likud on the deputy chairman of the Knesset and the establishment of temporary committees. The purpose of the move is for the Likud to gain a majority in the Knesset presidency, which is decisive in the Knesset debates and legislative proceedings until the formation of the government, but also to signal to the Netanyahu opposition bloc that Abbas voted against the Likud.

Members of the Knesset protested in the name of the committee, and that it was added to the agenda a few minutes before the debate began.

Zohar clarified that this would be a "committee for Arab society."

MK Issawi Fridge (Meretz) attacked "What should it be, who defined this thing?", To which Zohar replied "Everything can be said about me, but certainly not racist". Fridge continued to criticize sharply "Shame on you, you came back 50 A year back.

The authority of the Committee on Arab Affairs will be to discuss issues such as the eradication of crime and violence, planning and construction, and education and welfare in Arab society, as well as "general issues related to local authorities in Arab society" and "Negev issues in Arab society."

Abbas is expected to be the one to head it.

The discussions in the organizing committee that are taking place today are intended to bring to the Knesset's approval the composition of the temporary Knesset committees and the appointment of deputies as Speaker of the Knesset.
