Severe weather is expected to continue this week and bring storms and possible flooding to the US Deep South region.

(CNN) -

A storm system that will bring long-awaited rain to drought-stricken western states will also bring severe unwanted storms to the central United States this week.

Showers and thunderstorms moved across parts of California and portions of the desert southwest on Sunday.

Although less than 2.5 cm of rain is forecast in parts of central and southern California and the Southwest, any rain is welcome as these areas continue to suffer from persistent drought.

About 83% of the western United States is in drought conditions.

People in the central US are watching what happens to the system after the weekend.

Last week there were more than 150 reports of severe storms across the country, and some of those same areas could receive more by the middle of the week.

  • La Niña could worsen this year's tornado season, as it did in the deadly 2011 season.

"Starting Tuesday, the odds of thunderstorms will increase, especially across Northwest Florida where some storms can be severe," the National Weather Service office in Amarillo, Texas, said in a tweet this weekend.

"There may be additional stormy activity Wednesday alongside a cold front."

Severe weather probability for this Tuesday.

The greatest possibility of severe weather begins Tuesday from Wichita, Kansas, to San Angelo, Texas.

The main threats will be high winds, hail, and tornadoes.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) also warns that this Wednesday could have the potential for severe storms, but that depends largely on the evolution of the storms.

Also, if a more progressive system develops, that could suggest an increase in severe storms in the southeast and mid-Atlantic by the end of the week.

All of this will have to be watched in the coming days as the storm evolves.

Flash flooding will also be a concern for areas of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri, where some places could see more than 4 to 6 inches of rain Tuesday through Friday.

While areas of the Red River Valley, from northeastern North Dakota to northwestern Minnesota, would welcome rain to improve moderate to severe drought conditions in that region, too much rain in a short period of time could be dangerous. .

It has been a "quiet" month for tornadoes

Statistically speaking, May is the month with the highest number of tornadoes in the entire country, but April is also near the top of the list.

However, this year April is well below normal.

According to the SPC, there have been 34 confirmed tornadoes this month, well below the three-year average of 224.

This is a good thing.

We want that figure to be as low as possible, especially since the first three months of the year were slightly higher than normal.

From January to March, there were 218 confirmed tornadoes in the US, but the average is just 162. This is largely due to the fact that 191 tornadoes were confirmed in March, well above the monthly average of 82.

The area facing the greatest threat from severe storms on Tuesday has been relatively quiet in terms of severe weather this year.

"Most of the days of significant severe weather so far this year have been centered in the lower Mississippi Valley and the Deep South," said Taylor Ward, a CNN meteorologist.

“This could be the biggest threat of the year so far in Oklahoma and Kansas.

While this may be somewhat late in the spring, this is certainly not unusual, as late April and May is the peak for severe weather in the southern plains. '
