The police suspect that the attacker set her on fire and then tried to pretend that she had wanted to commit suicide.

The Mossos have reported the arrest on Tuesday.

The Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) of the regional police carried out the arrest on Monday night.

At five in the afternoon a call for help to the police station asked for help to attend to a woman who was seriously injured by burns in a villa in the Can Gordei urbanization, in La Bisbal del Penedès (Baix Penedès), a municipality that does not reach the 4,000 residents, located halfway between Tarragona and Vilafranca del Penedès.

Upon arriving at the scene, the agents located the victim in critical condition, but still alive, and his partner, who remained in the house. He suffered mild burns on his hands and arms and said that the woman had wanted to kill herself by burning herself with gasoline. She was in a very serious condition but, still conscious, she revealed to the paramedics who were treating her that it was the man who had set her on fire with the intention of killing her. The emergency personnel mobilized a medicalized helicopter to evacuate her urgently to the Hospital de la Vall d'Hebron, in Barcelona, where she later died a victim of the serious injuries she suffered. The alleged aggressor, treated at the El Vendrell Hospital, was detained for his alleged relationship with the crime. The Mossos accused him of a crime of homicide. The case is under summary secrecy.

Sources close to the investigation have indicated that there are no previous complaints of mistreatment by the victim towards her aggressor.

However, the detainee has several criminal records, including episodes of sexist violence.

The woman had previously been cared for, when she was with another couple, by battered women's assistance teams.

The City Council of La Bisbal del Penedès has issued a statement lamenting the death of the woman.

The Consistory says it does not have an official communication from the Mossos d'Esquadra stating that it is a case of sexist violence.

Neither victim nor alleged aggressor were not listed as residents of the municipality.

The chalet where the events took place is owned by a relative of the detainee.

If the sexist nature of the crime is confirmed, this would be the eighth murder due to gender violence so far this year and the number 1,086 since 2003, when the official count began.

In 2020, 45 women were killed by their partners or ex-partners.

The 016 phone serves victims of sexist violence 24 hours a day and in 51 languages.

It does not leave a trace on the invoice, but it must be deleted from the call log of the mobile phone.
