An exhibition in London that coincides with the 60th anniversary of the princess's birth recalls the famous Emanuel design that she wore at her wedding to Charles of England.

At the height of vaccinations against the coronavirus, normality seems to begin to settle in Europe and cultural activities that had to be interrupted are resumed. Thus, London has announced that it will reopen Kensington Palace on Wednesday 26 May. A place that, in addition to being the home of Prince William with Kate Middleton and their three children, also hosts popular temporary exhibitions. The one that will premiere on June 3 in the recently restored area of the Orangerie will be a success, without a doubt. Entitled

Royal Style in the Making

(something like

This is how the style of royalty is made

), it will show “never-before-seen objects from some of the most celebrated twentieth-century royal couturiers, as well as examples of dazzling dresses and stylish costumes created for three generations of royal women,” as explained by the site of Royal Historical Palaces in the communication that he has made to his followers.

There is one piece that stands out above all the others, as recognized in the newsletter distributed by Kensington.

"Among the stars that will be exhibited will be the wedding dress of Diana of Wales, complete, with its spectacular train covered with sequins, the longest in the history of royalty," reads the exhibition, highlighting the more than 7.6 meters which measured the dress of the then wife of Charles of England.

In addition, they also highlight that you can see a

, that is, a preliminary test of the dress worn by the queen mother at the coronation ceremony of George VI (her husband and father of Elizabeth II) in 1937. The exhibition starts on June 3 and can be seen in the London palace until January 2, 2022. It is mandatory to reserve tickets in advance, which are priced at 23 pounds (about 26.50 euros).

The Diana of Wales dress, dating from 1981, is the star of the exhibition, and shows how the British royal family continues to take advantage of the pull of the always controversial figure of the late princess.

She already did it in a previous exhibition between February and November 2017, when there was also a large display of princess dresses in Kensington.

Diana, Her Fashion Story

became a huge success with visitors and, of course, with income, where the public came with curiosity to see the costume with which she danced with John Travolta or designs by Gianni Versace, Catherine Walker or Jacques Azagury .

In this case, the wedding dress is, as they explain from the palace, "a loan from the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex", that is, from the brothers William and Henry of England, who have the property of one of the most important pieces that belonged to her mother, as she herself arranged in her will. “It is among the most famous wedding dresses in history, featuring a fitted center bodice overlaid in the center, both front and back, paneled with antique Carrickmacross (Ireland) lace that originally belonged to the queen. María, the groom's great-grandmother ”, he explains. “Her soft neckline and large puffed sleeves are adorned with bows and large taffeta ruffles, a style popularized by the princess in the early 1980s,while the wide skirt is supported by a large number of stiff mesh petticoats to create its famous silhouette. "

The exhibition coincides with two key anniversaries: the 40th anniversary of the wedding of the then princes of Wales, which took place on July 29, 1981, where that famous suit was seen; and especially the one that would have been Princess Diana's 60th birthday, on July 1. For that indicated date, it is expected that the confronted brothers will meet again in a small event in which they will discover a statue of their mother that they commissioned in 2017 (when it was the 20th anniversary of his death). The effigy has been made by Ian Rank-Broadley - whose portrait of Elizabeth II is the one that can be seen in sterling - and is expected to be placed in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace.

Diana's dress is quite a collector's item that has not been seen for 25 years, before the princess died in a car accident in Paris. It was created with absolute secrecy by the then marriage of David and Elizabeth Emanuel, who are now in a legal fight over their sketches. In January, David sued Elizabeth because she auctioned some sketches of Princess Diana's wedding dress - and some other designs - without her consent and breaking the agreement they had reached after their divorce, in which they agreed that none of the two could use the Emanuel brand for their business. Therefore, David Emanuel demanded that part of the rights to those sketches were his and he also wanted half of the benefits. A legal battle that, in any case,What is one of the most striking pieces in the history of fashion does not tarnish, and that British and probably many foreign visitors will be able to see in London from June 3.
