Gem in the old town

And again in the old town of Schongau a case of renovation has become a gem.

In the Kirchenstrasse, the original town farm, which last housed the construction business Leonhard Steidele and Uhren Zwack, has been converted into six apartments and a commercial space in the courtyard.

Schongau -

For a long time last year, the image of Kirchenstrasse in the old town of Schongau was shaped by a large construction waste container and an area closed off for pedestrians.

Now the last work was done and the tenants could move in.

The entrance to the courtyard is already based on the appearance of the original building after the great fire in Schongau, albeit not as high, but the arching in the facade has been made visible.

Much was still preserved, but was built over and has now been partially exposed again, explains architect Stephanie Hirschvogel from Peiting.

The result is a modernized urban farmer's property

The result is, so to speak, a modernized urban farmer's property from a former residential building and a small business section. In the main house south and north of the courtyard entrance, which could also have been a public alley, two apartments have been created on each level. Apartment five and six on the top floor benefit from the very steep roof construction with exposed beams. The rear facade is characterized by a central arbor with a dormer on the right and left.

Where there was once presumably a small stable for cattle, a separate building was created in the form of a small coach house, in which the architect will have her office in the future.

The former lime pit owned by Leonhard Steidele's construction business and building materials dealer, to which an inscription on the main facade on Kirchenstrasse refers, was excavated for this purpose and this newly gained cellar room was built over.

The chimneys of the Michl bakery, which is located on the nearby Christophstrasse, rise high behind it.

There is nothing to be seen of the swimming pool

Of the swimming pool, which once had its place in the courtyard and which older citizens can still remember, you can no longer see anything, but huge amounts of excavated material, rubble and old tiles had to be disposed of from the old courtyard.

On the history of the house at Kirchenstrasse 19: The house has a first entry from 1783 to 1810. Joseph Gabriel Pröbstl must have been the owner, also known as "old butcher Gabriel".

After his death, his widow took over.

After two more changes, Remigius Metzler von Asch bought the property in 1845, which in 1851 was also named "bei Gallen-Toni".

There is also a record of fire damage to the house, which was repaired - but the tax was exempt for five years.

The house must have burned down to the ground.

The old vault is still preserved in the cellar, but the preservationists have not dated it.

The excavation of the cellar was accompanied by archaeological documentation

On the other hand, the excavation of the cellar was accompanied by archaeological documentation, and of course all other work on the property, which is under historical ensemble protection, has been agreed with the monument office.

In 1873 the house was given to master bricklayer Ludwig Metzler sen.

who married Anna two years later.

In 1902 Ludwig Metzler junior took over.

The house was sold to Leonhard Steidele in 1902, who married Franziska Steidele.

From 1939 onwards, building business owner Ursula Steidele and master builder Heinrich Weirather were on the books.
