American and Iranian warships were involved in a tense meeting in the Persian Gulf earlier this month, the US Navy announced tonight (Tuesday), in the first incident of its kind after about a year and in parallel with the nuclear talks, which will continue today in Vienna. Documentation released by the Navy showed a Revolutionary Guards craft cutting in front of the American battleship Monomoy, which was forced to stop abruptly while its engine emitted smoke. Another ship, the Wrangle, was involved in a similar incident.

A spokeswoman for the Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, said U.S. ships, belonging to the Coast Guard, had sent warning messages over the radio network to Iranian vessels and activated their horns, but "they continued their unsafe maneuvers." She said about three hours later, Iranian vessels withdrew from the area.

Iran has not yet commented on the incident, which occurred at the southern tip of the Persian Gulf.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the incident, which involved the Iranian aid ship Hart and three Iranian high-speed assault ships.

The American vessels operate as part of Southeast Asia's patrol forces, its largest unit overseas.

The last time a similar dangerous encounter was recorded was on April 15 last year, but Iran almost completely reduced provocations in the U.S. Navy in 2019 and 2018.

This is compared to 14 such incidents in 2017, 35 in 2016 and 23 in 2015.

Typically, these naval incidents involve Revolutionary Guards vessels armed with machine guns and missile launchers, and they sometimes pass American aircraft carriers passing through the Straits of Hormuz, the narrow opening of the Persian Gulf through which about 20% of world oil supplies pass.
