Animals filed a complaint with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Environmental Protection yesterday (Monday), regarding animal cruelty and environmental offenses, after receiving documentation that reveals a particularly large amount of tilapia bodies.

They were found in an open area near fish ponds in Kibbutz Kfar Ruppin.

Animals estimates that the proximity of the corpses to the kibbutz's fish fattening ponds, where the same type of tilapia is kept, indicates that the fish that died were of no commercial value to the fish fattening industry, so they were thrown to a slow and excruciating death.

Judging by the condition of the corpses, they appear to have been in place for some time.

Animals told Israel Today: "The fish fattening industry treats the animals it exploits like garbage, and our nature like a garbage can. The tilapia fish got their name because they are dedicated parents, who in nature will do anything to preserve their offspring. .

They further stressed: "Experience shows that the promised way to prevent abuse is not to give our money to an industry that treats animals like damaged toilet paper on a production line."

Tilapia fish make up about 43 percent of the fish kept in Israel and are estimated at more than 2 million fish a year.

The number of animals in the fattening pond industry is based on estimates, as official data estimate the fish by weight and not as individuals.

According to Animals, this indicates indifference.

From the village of Ruppin it was reported that an official response would be received from the Fish Breeders Organization.

The organization said: "The fish farmers operate in accordance with the most stringent regulations and subject to the procedures of the Ministry of Agriculture. The incident is under review by professionals and enforcement. If there has been an exception to these managers, we are confident that the matter will be addressed."

The Ministry of Agriculture stated: "The issue is being handled by us. A few days ago, our office received a complaint on the subject, following which we opened an investigation."
