New Biden administration facing increasing diplomatic emergencies

DECRYPTION - U.S. allies greeted with relief a new U.S. president who was more courteous than his predecessor, and his return to a more multilateral approach to foreign policy.


No major crisis has yet erupted, but tensions are mounting.

Joe Biden's foreign policy was to be a complete break with that of Donald Trump.

The new president had promised to reassure U.S. allies, reconnect with multilateralism, and put human rights at the center of U.S. diplomacy, signaling to the world that the era of isolationism is over, and to autocratic regimes that that of complacency was too.

While in the first few months of his presidency he returned the United States to more traditional diplomacy, restored the State Department to its role, and reestablished peaceful relations with America's allies, Biden did has not yet broken with its predecessor on all issues.
