Switzerland: opponents of "marriage for all" enforce referendum

2021-04-29T22:27:58.049Z

In December, the Swiss parliament decided to allow same-sex couples to marry. Now opponents of the decision have collected enough signatures to push through a referendum.

“Marriage for all”, which was only anchored in the Swiss civil code in December, is voted on in a referendum.

Opponents have submitted almost 70,000 signatures and thus pushed through a referendum, as the Federal Chancellery in Bern announced on Tuesday.

In December, parliament approved marriage for same-sex couples and access to sperm donation for lesbian couples.

Behind the referendum is a non-partisan initiative that advertises with the slogan "Yes to marriage and family, No to marriage for everyone".

She argues that only marriage between a man and a woman is a "natural cohabitation".

"Only from this connection can children emerge who will secure the future of society."

The political movement "Operation Libero" holds against it.

According to her own statements, she has collected 107,000 signatures for a petition in favor of "marriage for all" and wants to get involved in the vote against the opponents.

Operation Libero says it advocates an open Switzerland and liberal concerns.

In most Western European countries, marriage is already the law for everyone, in Germany it has been since 2017. The option is widely used: every 14th new marriage in Germany has been same-sex since then.

Tens of thousands of homosexual couples have married since the fall of 2017.

About two thirds of them had previously lived in a civil partnership.
