More families eat less than three times a day in Colombia

According to a new report, only 68.8% of those surveyed declared having consumed three meals a day in March 2021.

The number of families in Colombia who eat less than three times a day has tripled since the beginning of the pandemic, according to a new report from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) published on Monday.

The new report, which surveyed more than 15,000 citizens in 23 main urban areas, states that only 68.8% of those surveyed declared having consumed three meals a day in March 2021.

90.4% of those surveyed stated that they used to consume three meals a day before the pandemic, according to the report.

The new report is further proof of the devastating impact the pandemic has had on the Colombian economy.

Unemployment is now 16%, when before the pandemic it was 9%, also according to DANE.

Union leaders called a national strike on March 28 to protest the government's handling of the pandemic, despite isolation measures imposed by local authorities to try to curb the spread of the virus.
