Brussels is fertile ground for lobbyists.
The European institutions are surrounded by a veritable network of more
e 12,500 pressure groups, with a cumulative annual budget exceeding 1.5 billion euros, according to Corporate Europe Observatory. Agriculture, finance, energy, digital… There is not a subject for which large companies, industrial interests or NGOs of all stripes are not represented. Only Washington welcomes more. To regulate pressures, and ensure greater transparency on interactions between decision-makers and lobbyists, the rules will be tightened. At a minimum. The transparency register has existed since 2012. Since then, Brussels has experienced episodes of extremely intense lobbying, such as recently around the regulation on digital services. The vote of the European Parliament on Tuesday and the green light expected by Friday from the member states give the clap of the end of a negotiation of more than four years.
