Haimhausen - The last item on the agenda of the most recent meeting of the Social, Cultural and Education Committee was something special.

A guided tour of the Haimhauser Friedhof.

The occasion: The type of burial has changed more and more over the years.

Michaela Schilasky from the municipality's regulatory office compared the situation today with that of 2006. 15 years ago the number of coffin burials was 82 percent, today it has fallen significantly to 35 percent.

Instead, urn burials are becoming more and more popular.

19 percent of the urns are placed in existing earth graves, six percent in urn graves, 21 percent in an urn wall and 20 percent under a tree.

The latter variant has been around since 2012 and is enjoying growing popularity.

“The tree burials have been very well received,” said Claudia Kops as chair of the committee.

Here, organic urns are placed in the ground in front of a tree and closed with a round plate.

With the demand for urn burials soaring, the community built a new urn wall, which was completed in the last quarter of last year.

The urn wall and more and more dissolved graves are now contributing to the fact that there is more free space in the cemetery.

There are already some considerations as to how this can be used: Another urn wall as it already exists or an urn wall as a demarcation - as a wall, so to speak.

Michaela Schilasky can also imagine having so-called urn steles built.

This is a kind of post with about three to four urn places on top of each other.

How exactly the steles can be set up on the site is still open.

But there are other ways to fill the free space: "We have to think about special graves," said Kops. “For example for other faiths.” There have already been two Muslim funerals at Haimhauser Friedhof. The special graves also include large graves.
