Tensions in East Jerusalem and fears of escalation on the Gaza Strip border:

The Palestinian leadership will meet today (Thursday) in Ramallah to hear the decision of Palestinian Authority Chairman Abu Mazen regarding the Palestinian parliamentary elections, which are scheduled for May 22.

Among all Palestinian officials, both Fatah and Hamas, there is a consensus that Abu Mazen has decided to postpone the election, with the official excuse being Israel's disagreement that East Jerusalem residents will participate in the election. Get off the tree, as the real fear is of a Hamas victory, which according to all polls and assessments in the Palestinian political system is likely to defeat Fatah, which has split into three separate lists.

Palestinian Minister of Civil Affairs Hussein al-Sheikh returned from Doha, the capital of Qatar, where he went on a mission by Palestinian Authority Chairman Abu Mazen to discuss with senior Qatari government officials the possibility of postponing the Palestinian Authority elections with Hamas consent.

According to senior officials in Gaza and Ramallah, Fatah official Jibril Rajoub and deputy chairman of the Hamas political bureau, Saleh al-Aruri, have been talking at length in recent days in an attempt to find an agreed outline that would allow the election to take place.

According to senior Gaza officials, Rajoub is angry with Abu Mazen's advisers, who say he is pushing him to issue the order canceling the election, while Rajoub has personally pledged to Hamas that the election will not be canceled.

"We prefer that the decision to postpone the elections scheduled for May 22 be made with the consent of all factions," a senior official in the Abu Mazen bureau in Ramallah told Israel Today. My presidency reserves the right to postpone the election to another date. "

At the same time, the defense establishment is preparing for Abu Mazen's decision.

Israel does not rule out the possibility that the cancellation of the elections will lead to the firing from the Gaza Strip and possibly even to the return of violent demonstrations along the border.

Also, the possibility of an outburst of rage in Judea and Samaria and the return of individual attacks is not ruled out.

Apart from the apparent cancellation of the elections, there are several other factors that could accelerate escalation in Gaza and the West Bank.

One of these factors is the tension in Jerusalem over the issue of checkpoints at the Nablus Gate.

Although the police have folded these checkpoints, the tension surrounding the issue, which was the cause of the shooting from Gaza last weekend, has not yet completely subsided.

Besides, these are the days of Ramadan fasting, known as the days of security calamity.

Added to this is the corona that is raging in Gaza and knocking down many cavities.

"Do not want escalation"

A senior Hamas official told Israel Today that the movement's position is that "postponing the election should not lead to an escalation with Israel. We are not currently interested in reaching a military confrontation with Israel, certainly not in light of Abu Mazen's decision to postpone the election."

The terrorist organization issued a statement last night: "We oppose the postponement or cancellation of the elections. If the elections are not held on time, Israel will bear the consequences."
