A six-month-old toddler drowned today (Wednesday) in a bathtub in Jerusalem.
MDA medics and paramedics who arrived at the scene performed resuscitation operations on the toddler, and evacuated her to Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus while she was breathing and her condition was severely defined.
"We were led into the house where the toddler was, unconscious, after being underwater," said David Reichman, an MDA paramedic. "The toddler was without a pulse and without breathing and we immediately began performing advanced resuscitation, which included massages and resuscitation.
After a few minutes, the pulse returned. "
Orly Silvinger, executive director of the organization Before Child Safety, reports that drowning is the second leading cause of child mortality and reminds not to leave babies and toddlers in a water environment alone: "In the last five years, 103 children have drowned, four of them in the bathtub. I call on parents, do not tell me this will not happen, do not leave babies and toddlers in a water environment alone even for a moment. Babies and toddlers can also drown in shallow water a few inches deep and even in the bath. "Once their mouth and nose are covered in water, they are in a drowning state, and four to six minutes later, irreversible brain damage to death occurs."
