He was 90 years old.

Known as "the loneliest man in history," Michael Collins was best known for piloting the Apollo 11 command module that orbited Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin as they walked on the lunar surface for the first time in 1969.

"NASA is mourning the loss of this accomplished pilot and astronaut, a friend to all who seek to expand human potential," NASA Acting Administrator Steve Jurczyk said in a statement.

“Whether your work was behind the scenes or on display, your legacy will always be as one of the leaders who took America's first steps into the cosmos.

And his spirit will accompany us as we venture into more distant horizons.

Michael Collins was born in Italy in 1930.
