Chancellor Angela Merkel does not lift a finger for her follower Armin Laschet.

With his attack on the Laschet ally Merz, CSU boss Markus Söder is now going too far.

A comment.

A green chancellor for Germany?

This is no longer a nightmare for more and more voters.

What seemed unimaginable to many, however, is the longing for death, which is taking over the Union more and more every day.

The next weekend, the next interview, in which one of the Union leaders states what he thinks of the other.

Namely nothing.

What Söder has to say about Laschet corresponds in more sedate terms to the (false) judgment that Strauss once made about Kohl: “totally incapable”.

Söder's signal is clear - Laschet only has one trump card

The signal is clear: the CDU chief cannot count on help from Munich.

But what the Union needs least of all now are bad losers.

Or strikers who aim at their own goal when you're already 0: 1 behind.

Even the Chancellor makes no move to put her weight on the scales for Armin Laschet, her most loyal follower for a long time.

At the end of her reign she presents herself as floating above the parties.

This is not a good script to defend power in Berlin.

Laschet only has one trump card.

And that is Friedrich Merz of all people, the old rival, whom he could only bring down in the fight for party leadership by mobilizing all his strength (and with Söder's help).

The more Merkel lets Laschet down, the more Laschet needs to rely on Merz

The CDU chief hesitated for a long time to accept Merz's offer to make him shadow super minister. The concern that a Merz would be too dominant was too big, the Merkel voters pissed off. But the more Merkel and Söder let Laschet down, the more urgently he has to rely on the Sauerlander to mobilize at least the conservative voters for the Union. But Söder is already maddening this helper. He hopes that Laschet's team “doesn't just consist of Merz and Maaßen”, he says. To name the two in the same breath is a particularly gross foul from Munich. Because in doing so, the CSU boss is making himself a key witness for the Greens. If Söder does not want to become Chancellor himself, would Baerbock rather than Laschet? And does he not notice how he, who could be the black giant of the Union, belittles himself in his resentment?
