Spotify and Apple are looking for the listener of paid podcasts

2021-05-01T05:21:03.053Z

The main audio platforms coincide in announcing services that allow creators to charge 'premium' listeners for their proposals

The Spotify platform launched a monthly

podcast

subscription service in the United States on Tuesday

which will be rolled out to other countries in the coming months.

Apple had announced a similar service just a week earlier.

Both systems will allow audio creators and producers to get more out of their works, but it will also serve as the starting gun for the race, which the two large companies seem to want to start as soon as possible, for customers and paid content, something very similar which keeps video platforms at odds.

Among the novelties of Spotify, a platform that in March had 158 million paying subscribers around the world, will be the option to mark episodes for subscribers only and publish them on its platform or on others.

The company will not charge a commission for the income that creators receive in the next two years, except for a commission that the payment gateway keeps, which does not depend on Spotify.

From then on, you will keep 5% of what is generated by each audio.

Authors will be able to choose whether to charge 2.47 euros, 4.13 or 6.61 euros per month (2.99, 4.99 or 7.99 dollars per month).

The content will appear within the Spotify application as one more, this time marked with a padlock on the play button.

Apple had announced the addition of subscriptions to its audio platform a week earlier. According to the company, subscriptions will give listeners access to benefits managed by creators, such as no advertising or special episodes and content. To those creators, it offers them to analyze the behavior of their contents and to know the news of the platform in Apple Podcasts for Creators. Apple subscriptions will be available in May in 170 countries. In this case, it will be the authors who establish the price to be paid by the listeners. The minimum price will be 40 cents a month (49 cents) and Apple will keep 30% of the proceeds from paid subscriptions during the first year. From there, the percentage will drop to 15%.The user must be part of the Apple Podcasters Program, which offers the necessary tools to enable the payment option and has a cost of $ 19.99 per year in the United States (just over 16 euros).

According to the II Report on voice and audio in Spain prepared by the consulting firms Prodigioso Volcán and SEIM, which analyzes, among other things, the habits of consumers of audio formats in 2020, Spotify is the preferred platform for listening to

podcasts

(48.2 %) followed by iVoox (25.5%), Google Podcasts (21.9%) and Apple Podcast (15.4%).
