With the closing of the door for accepting candidacy applications in the presidential elections today, the number of applicants for the post of President of the Republic reached 51 candidates, including 7 women.

The last day of receiving candidacy applications witnessed the submission of 10 new candidacy applications, bringing the number of applications reported to the People's Assembly by the Supreme Constitutional Court to 51, including 7 female candidacy applications.

The Speaker of the People's Assembly, Hammouda Sabbagh, announced the opening of the door for candidacy in the presidential elections, in implementation of the provisions of the constitution, starting from Monday, the 19th of this month, until the end of the official working hours from today, Wednesday, April 28, 2021.

The General Elections Law stipulates that an application to run for the office of President of the Republic is not accepted unless the applicant has written support for his candidacy from at least 35 members of the People's Assembly, and none of these members may support more than one candidate.

The process of supporting the members of the People's Assembly for their candidates in the presidential elections began on the twentieth of this month and is taking place in a special hall within the building of the Council in the presence of the Speaker of the People’s Assembly. Support and include the name of the candidate who wants to support him, then puts the paper in a special envelope and seals it with a laser tag and puts it in the affirmations box.

After the deadline for the written confirmations process expires, the fund is sealed and sent to the Supreme Constitutional Court, which supervises the electoral process, studies the legality of candidacy applications, and decides on them.
