Gregory McMichael and Travis McMichael, father and son, and William 'Roddie' Bryan had already been charged with the murder of Arbery last year, a black man who had been jogging through a neighborhood when he was attacked by white suspects. Now they face new charges.

Three Georgia men previously charged with the murder of Ahmaud Arbery were indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday and

charged with hate crimes and attempted kidnapping

.

Arbery was jogging in Brunswick, Georgia, when Travis McMichael, 35, and his father, Gregory McMichael, 65, chased him in their truck and shot him dead on February 23, 2020.

William 'Roddie' Bryan, 51, who was driving behind them in another truck, filmed the incident.

Travis and Gregory were also charged with carrying and unloading a firearm during a violent crime, the Justice Department reported in a news release.

Gregory and Travis, father and son, had already been charged with Arbery's murder in May 2020.

Arbery, 25,

was killed by three shotgun shots at close range

after the McMichaels chased him in a pickup truck as he jogged through his neighborhood.

Arbery had been dead for more than two months when cellphone video of the shooting leaked and national protests erupted.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the case the next day and promptly arrested Travis McMichael, who fired the shots, his father, and Bryan, a neighbor who joined the chase and recorded the video.

The three men remain in jail on state murder charges and are due to return to court in May.
