Freising's Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher considers the concert and congress hall planned at the airport to be a "great opportunity".

But a Green councilor holds against it.

Freising

- SWM Real Estate intends to take the next step in realizing a concert and congress hall on the airport grounds as soon as possible. The company, based in Freising, announced that it intends to enter the planning procedure for the MUCcc via the municipal route in the near future. This removes the fears of the project critics that the investors could try to obtain building rights earlier and over the heads of the city by means of a sovereign plan approval.

"MUCcc is a project from the region, for the region," emphasizes Lorenz Schmid, Managing Director of SWM Real Estate.

"We very much welcome the fact that the approval process and thus also the decision on the project lies with the City of Freising and its city councilors." The process also guarantees public participation.

OB sees opportunities to increase attractiveness and collect taxes

Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher welcomed this. “It is also in our interest that this is properly dealt with and objectively assessed in terms of building law. There are still a few questions to be answered. ”He himself has a positive attitude towards the project. “I see it as a great opportunity.” On the one hand, such a hall could increase the attractiveness of the city, on the other hand, not insignificant trade tax revenues can be expected. Since the project, which cost around 200 million euros, would be financed entirely privately, the city would not incur a single cent in costs. "Even the land-use planning must pay the investors."

Green city councilor and cultural advisor Susanne Günther would like to prevent the project - also with reference to the fact that the city council has recognized the global climate emergency.

She fears that the one million hall visitors that the investors are targeting every year will be "an enormous increase in traffic, artificially generated event flights and land consumption".

Günther appeals to the city council

Günther would generally be in favor of the city of Freising having municipal planning sovereignty for areas on which construction projects “with an immense impact on the region are planned”.

But she wants even more, namely that the entire priority area of the airport, which is located on Freising, comes under municipal planning sovereignty.

That would affect the area north of the airport, where not only the concert hall could be built, but still the third runway - even if it is put on hold until 2028.

Günther's appeal to the city council: “We owe it to ourselves and to everyone who has been fighting against the third runway for decades.” However, many city council members are also very positive about the project.

Concert hall could be helpful in the fight against 3rd runway

When asked by FT, however, Eschenbacher reminded them that there was already a building permit for the third runway.

“So the fight against the runway is on another level.

Linking these together makes no sense. ”Comparable procedures for the MUCcc are rather the procedures that have already been completed for the post distribution center or the new fire service training center.

From the point of view of the OB, the construction project would rather help in the fight against the third runway.

“With a possible concert and congress center, the airport would get a structural completion.

In this respect, it would also be in the interests of limited airport growth. "
