Official groundbreaking ceremony at the Isen elementary and middle school: the general renovation and expansion of the school is to take place while the school is in operation.

Isen

- After six years of planning, the time has come: with the groundbreaking on Wednesday, the general renovation and expansion of the Isen elementary and middle school was officially started.

In addition to the mayor Irmgard Hibler, there were planners and headmasters.

The extension and renovation should be finished in five years.

Mayor Hibler wished the ambitious project, which is to be carried out in sections while the school is running, to have an accident-free course.

The extension will begin on the north wing, which will be followed by the renovation of the central wing, west wing, caretaker's apartment and east wing.

When the outdoor facilities are completed at the beginning of the school year 2026, the municipality will have a barrier-free school with modern standards.

Functional units for administration and all-day school, a spacious cafeteria, elevator and digital equipment in the classrooms and specialist rooms should meet the requirements of modern school operations.

Planning, design of the construction process and choice of equipment took place in close cooperation with the school management.

Work on securing the subsoil is currently underway.

The roof renovation of the gymnasium is being carried out as an independent measure; the concrete start of construction has not yet been determined.

Sebastian Kruppa is entrusted with property monitoring, and the municipality will employ an employee for construction site logistics, construction site monitoring and securing the way to school and the school building.

The planning for a general renovation and expansion has been in place since 2016, which is now to be implemented in a modified form.

Instead of adapting the building - as originally planned - only for fire protection, renovating the roof, replacing the heating and creating barrier-free access, the expansion was also in the room in 2015.

The planners wanted to create the required additional classrooms, which were justified by new forecasts of the number of pupils, in the north of the school: the so-called north wing was to be added to the entire length and height. A container school was to ensure that the lessons ran smoothly during the first construction phase. The construction time was set at 48 months in 2018, the costs, which had been estimated at six million euros for the simple renovation, exceeded the 20 million mark. When they were at 26 million euros, the municipality pulled the emergency brake: By saving on the facade and windows and not relocating the classrooms, expenses were reduced to 23.2 million euros.

A temporary building site corridor was planned so that lessons could continue to be held in the old north wing. The current budget is based on total costs of 28 million euros for the measure. In the calculated costs of 25.6 million euros, a three percent increase in costs was included, the expected price increase was thus buffered. However, Markt Isen, which is solely responsible for the elementary school, and the school association of the middle school do not bear the total amount: almost 60 percent come from the Free State. In addition, there is money from the state for the planned renovation of the gym.

The idea of leaving the school built in the 1960s in the village and not replacing it with a new building on the green field did not only meet with approval.

When it became known in 2018 that part of the Schlittenberg on the Bräuanger had to give way to a parking lot, resistance arose.

Two years after these protests and five years after the plans to expand the existing building had been announced for the first time, a movement against the renovation and for a new building formed.

However, a planned referendum could not be implemented.
