The Coordinator of Government Operations in the Occupied Territories, Major General Rassan Aliyan, decided today (Thursday) to return the fishing area in the Gaza Strip to 15 nautical miles after security consultations.

"The return of civilian policy toward the Gaza Strip to a routine is conditional on the continuation of peace and security stability," the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

Following the rocket fire from Gaza last week, the IDF decided on the night between Sunday and Monday to reduce the fishing area in the Gaza Strip from 15 to nine nautical miles, and after a few hours, following another firing, announced its complete closure. Rockets were fired at Israeli territory from Gaza, apparently due to messages conveyed by Israel that if the situation continued, the response would be harsh and widespread.

As you may recall, the security cabinet authorized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Bnei Gantz to begin military action against Hamas in the Gaza Strip in case the shooting continues.

In light of the fact that Israel has not responded in recent days to the firing from the Gaza Strip, and in light of the "open book" policy, the Israeli response, if it comes, will be powerful and will aim against quality goals that bother Israel.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian leadership will convene today in Ramallah to hear the decision of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on the holding of elections to the Palestinian parliament, which are expected to take place on May 22.

Among all Palestinian officials, both Fatah and Hamas, there is a consensus that Abu Mazen has decided to postpone the election, with the official excuse being Israel's disagreement that East Jerusalem residents will participate in the election. Get off the tree, as the real fear is of a Hamas victory, which according to all polls and assessments in the Palestinian political system is likely to defeat Fatah, which has split into three separate lists.

In recent days, Hamas has sent messages to Israel that on Tuesday they tried to prevent the firing on Israel and were unsuccessful.

But as the shooting continues, Israel's restraint space shrinks.

Even if in the end Israel does not respond this time that the firing from Gaza will not continue, the defense establishment clarifies that "the notebook is open and the hand is recording" and that the next round, when it begins, will begin at a higher intensity in light of a series of security breaches.

A senior Hamas official told Israel Today that the movement's position is that "postponing the election should not lead to an escalation with Israel. We are not currently interested in reaching a military confrontation with Israel, certainly not in light of Abu Mazen's decision to postpone the election."

The terrorist organization issued a statement last night: "We oppose the postponement or cancellation of the elections. If the elections are not held on time, Israel will bear the consequences."
