Mahmoud Wazi, Iran's chief of staff Hassan Rouhani, this morning (Thursday) referred to talks in Vienna over a new nuclear deal and confirmed that the negotiating teams had reached some understandings on the issue.

The senior sounded optimistic although he admitted that the situation was complex, and in this context said that "what has been done so far is promising".

Despite threats from the Biden administration about the return of sanctions from the Trump era, it appears that reaching a new-old agreement is imminent nonetheless.

"Very good steps have been taken," he said, reiterating the importance of the talks against the background of "hopes of extremists within the Zionist regime and the United States to thwart the talks."

Iranian President Rouhani: "We are not looking for a nuclear bomb"

Meanwhile, criticism of Foreign Minister Muhammad Javad Zarif has intensified in Iran, after an interview with him was leaked early last week.

In the recording, Zarif was harshly criticized against the Revolutionary Guards and Quds Force commander Qassem Suleimani (who was assassinated in January 2020), whom he accused of attempting to intervene in the regime's foreign policy in order to thwart the nuclear deal.

This morning it was reported that President Rouhani has fired one of his advisers as a direct result of exposing the affair.

Meanwhile, the Bloomberg agency reported that a senior U.S. delegation would arrive in the region this week to discuss the nuclear deal with Iran.

Brett McGurk, coordinator of the White House National Security Committee, will head it.

Derek Schultz, a senior adviser to the Secretary of State, will join as well.

The delegation is expected to visit Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Egypt and Jordan.
